  • Air France – Month-long Strike in Paris Averted

    Air France pilots have called off plans to strike daily between May 3 and May 30.

  • Italy – Aviation Strikes Delayed

    Unionized air traffic controllers in Italy postponed a nationwide strike slated to occur 1230-1630 May 3 at governmental request. A future date for the strike has not yet been announced.

  • BWI Airport – Aircraft Accident Emergency Drills This Saturday

    Passengers at BWI Thurgood Marshall Airport and area residents might notice unusual activity this weekend. Emergency crews will be responding to a simulated aircraft accident Saturday as part of an emergency planning exercise. The drill is not expected to affect normal airport operations.

  • Iceland – Icelandair Pilots Threaten Strike

    Icelandair pilots are threatening to walk out beginning on May 9th, with the potential for five strikes over three weeks – none lasting less than 12 hours. The Icelandic airport workers strike has been averted.

  • Russia – Pro-Government Rallies

    Russian authorities have issued permits for several pro-government and opposition group rallies/demonstrations to take place in Moscow and St. Petersburg between May 1 – 6, 2014. The potential for confrontation cannot be ruled out. U.S. citizens should also be aware of the possibility for counter-demonstrations or other spontaneous protest activity throughout the Moscow region and other areas of Russia. Such large gatherings will likely cause significant traffic and mass-transit disruptions. U.S. citizens should carry their identification and show it if requested to do so by legitimate authorities.

  • Europe – VE Day Rallies

    Rallies and special events are planned in commemoration of VE (Victory in Europe) Day, celebrated May 7-9 in various nations. Expect crowds and road closures.

  • Brunei – Sharia Laws Adopted

    Travelers are advised that the gradual implementation of the sharia penal code began on May 1, 2014. The Islamic criminal law is set to include punishments such as flogging, dismemberment and death by stoning for crimes such as rape, adultery, and sodomy. The religious laws will operate alongside the existing civil penal code.Inform yourself of the relevant provisions specifically related to Brunei, regardless of your religion, as the penal code is applicable to Muslims and non-Muslims.

  • London – Tube Strike

    Thousands of London Tube workers, including station staff and train operators, are set to stage a 72-hour strike starting 2100 May 5. The strike will likely cause severe delays across the London Underground system and reduce Tube service by around 50 percent. Although transport system operator Transport for London will significantly increase bus services during the strike period, the industrial action will likely paralyze public transport throughout the city through early May 9.
