Italy – Rail Strike Jul 12-13

Railway personnel will stage a 24-hour strike beginning 2100 July 12 to protest labor reform. The industrial action will affect rail maintenance and logistics services, as well as routes on rail networks of Trenitalia, Trenord, and high-speed rail company NTV. Delays and cancellations on long-distance trains, as well as on commuter and regional train services are likely. Expect altered schedules, delays, and cancellations on Italian passenger lines. The work stoppage will not include employees at Trenitalia’s freight division, Trenitalia Cargo.

Germany – Berlin Tegel Runway Closure July 14-21

Berlin Tegel Airport’s southern runway will close for restoration work July 14-21. Though authorities intend to run at full capacity, exclusive reliance on the northern runway could cause flight disruptions during this period. Anticipate possible flight delays.

U.S. and U.K. – Security Increases

Passengers traveling on any airline to the U.S. from select airports in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa should expect additional security measures relative to carry-on items. All battery-operated electronic devices intended for carry-on must be operational, including tablets, phones, e-readers, and laptops. If the device cannot be powered on it will not travel on the flight and could be confiscated. Travelers should be mindful of this and limit use of electronics as needed to ensure that they have power when passing through all security checkpoints. Passengers are encouraged to allow an additional 30-45 minutes at the airport to account for these and other additional screening requirements. These measures have been extended to include some flights to and from the U.K. regardless of destination or origin, and some flights within the U.S.

Guam and Philippines – Tropical Storm

Tropical Storm 09W is predicted to intensify before passing near or over the island of Guam July 12. Projections indicate that Tropical Storm 09W will continue moving westward and may approach the northern Philippines early next week, but it is still too distant to make accurate extended predictions. The storm will bring heavy rains to Guam and the southern Northern Mariana Islands, including Rota, Tinian, and Saipan. Flash and coastal flooding is likely. Strong winds could also down trees and power lines. Power outages are likely. Expect flight disruptions on Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands.

Q and A

My company does not reimburse for GPS on rental cars, but it keeps appearing in my cars anyway. I’ve made sure to remove the option from my frequent renter profile. What am I missing?

Have you checked your Travel-On profile? When we make a car rental reservation for you we use your Travel-On profile to do so and any preferences listed there are automatically included in the reservation request. A request for GPS listed there will override any request not to have it that’s in your frequent renter profile. Make sure your Travel-On profile and frequent renter profile are matched up and you should have no more issues with this.
