Australia – Asian Cup Jan 9-31

Australia will host the 2015 Asian Football Confederation’s Asian Cup Jan. 9-31. Matches will take place at stadiums in Brisbane, Canberra, Melbourne, Newcastle, and Sydney. Host cities will likely experience traffic congestion and road detours on match days.Security will be extremely tight during the Asian Cup. While there is no intelligence indicating any attack plots, the event presents an attractive target. Plan for unannounced road closures and traffic congestion, especially near stadiums and hotels where the players will be staying. Hotels, taxis, and rental cars will be in high demand in host cities on match dates.

Mumbai – Airport Security Alert

High alert sounded at Mumbai international airport after a message threatening to carry out an attack on Saturday is found scribbled on a wall of a washroom on the airport premises. Security inside and surrounding the airport has been increased.

Europe – Security Increased

Terror threat levels have increased across much of western Europe due to the growing threat of a “mass casualty attack” such as blowing up a passenger plane, shootings in crowded places, and hit-and-run attacks using vehicles. Security and surveillance in areas that may be considered prime targets, such as transportation hubs (airports, train stations) and key infrastructure, has been increased.

United States – Winter Weather

Hard freeze and wind chill advisories, and flood warnings remain in effect throughout the south, including Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, and South Carolina through the weekend. Blizzard, winter storm, and flood warnings remain in effect through the weekend for Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, western New York state, North Dakota, and South Dakota. Travel may be affected.

San Francisco – Golden Gate Closed

Starting at midnight tonight and continuing through 4 a.m. Monday, San Francisco’s Golden Gate Bridge will be closed so that a movable median barrier can be installed to prevent head-on collisions.

Denmark, Germany, Netherlands – Severe Weather

Two powerful storms are forecast to bring severe weather to northern Europe Jan. 9-11. The storms will generate powerful onshore winds that will produce very high water levels and potential storm surge flooding in numerous coastal towns in Germany, Denmark, and the Netherlands. Wind-related flight delays and cancellations are highly likely. Localized flight disruptions could have a cascading effect on some airlines’ networks across the continent. Major international airports where storm-related disruptions could occur include Hamburg and Copenhagen.

Vietnam – Internet Service Disrupted

High-speed Internet services could be disrupted through at least Feb. 5th across a number of countries in Southeast Asia due to a severed submarine cable. The greatest effects will likely be felt in Vietnam, however, as the country has fewer alternate cables than others in the region; the damaged cable has the largest capacity among the five submarine cables serving Vietnam. Expect reduced speeds with disruptions most noticeable during international video calls or whenever international Internet broadband is necessary.

Melbourne – Terminal 4 Closed

Terminal 4 at Melbourne Airport in Australia, which is specifically for Tigerair, was closed and evacuated at 9 p.m. after a security alert was received against Tigerair.

Q and A

I need to travel several times this winter – what can I do to protect myself from weather delays?

Winter can be a great time to travel both for business and pleasure. To lessen the chances of weather events adversely impacting your trip, consider these tips:

  • Select a flight early in the day
  • Choose an airline with multiple flights and routes to your destination
  • Pick a non-stop flight if possible
  • If you must connect try to route through a city in the south
  • Pack as lightly as possible and take everything you need for an unplanned overnight with you on board
  • Consider shipping your luggage ahead
  • Fully charge all electronics (especially your cell phone) before heading to the airport and take a charger with you in your carry-on
  • Dress comfortably in layers and pack some snacks
  • Allow extra times to get to the airport, and from the airport to your destination
  • Provide the airline and Travel-On with your cell phone number
  • Reconfirm your flight status before heading to the airport
  • Take advantage of airline offers to change your plans without penalty in advance of an anticipated storm
  • If your flight is cancelled, avoid the lines at the airport and call Travel-On immediately to rebook
  • Understand your rights – airlines are not required to compensate travelers for weather delays, but may provide a meal and a cot if stranded overnight
