Belgium – Threatened Strike

Trade unions threaten an additional national 24-hour strike on May 12th.

Baltimore – Rallies Continue

Large street rallies are likely to continue nightly in Baltimore, MD, including along W North Avenue, outside City Hall, and in the downtown area. Large contingents of police and National Guard personnel remain deployed in West Baltimore and Downtown Baltimore. Increased security can be expected through at least May 5. A nightly curfew remains in effect 2200-0500 through May 5. A citywide state of emergency is also in effect. Significant traffic disruptions can be expected when crowds march through West Baltimore and on major streets between West Baltimore and City Hall, which has been the site of repeated protests. More vandalism and looting cannot be ruled out. Representatives from the Black Lawyers for Justice have confirmed plans for a May 2 protest at 1400 EDT at City Hall, followed by a march through Downtown Baltimore. The May 2 rally will likely be very large, and the possible presence of demonstrators from outside Baltimore could result in security problems.

Chile – Volcano Eruption

A third eruption at the Calbuco Volcano in southern Chile has prompted the National Office of Emergency of the Interior Ministry to issue a red alert for the communes of Puerto Montt and Puerto Varas in the Los Lagos Region. The eruption has caused flight cancellations at Bariloche and San Martin de los Andes airports in Argentina April 30. More disruptions are possible at these airports and others, including Puerto Montt, depending on the altitude of the ash cloud and where it spreads.

Australia – Cyclone Quang

Severe Tropical Cyclone Quang has tracked southeastward much faster than originally anticipated and is forecast to make landfall in the Gascoyne Region in Western Australia at about 1800 AWST May 1. Current projections have the storm continuing to weaken before crossing the coast west of Exmouth. Very heavy rain will probably result in flash flooding in parts of the Gascoyne and western Pilbara regions.

Italy – Alitalia Strike

Some Alitalia personnel will be on strike for 24 hours on May 7th. Travelers are advised to reconfirm flights.

Japan – Golden Week

Travel disruption is possible throughout Japan during the ‘Golden Week’ series of national holidays May 1-5. Normal commercial activities may also be hampered during this time. Over 450,000 people expected to travel during the period.

London – Train Disruption

Bank Holiday tourists face a long weekend of rail and road snarl-ups with strikes, roadworks, and ongoing problems near London’s busiest rail junction. East Coast trains will be affected by a 24-hour strike on May 4, while some South West services into and out of London will be disrupted.

Q and A

Can Travel-On exchange a ticket I purchased somewhere else?

No, unfortunately not. An airline ticket is connected to the channel through which you purchased it and no other channel is able to change the ticket in any way. In other words, if you purchased a ticket from Travel-On then only Travel-On and the airline can change that ticket; if you purchased a ticket from Orbita, then only Orbitz and the airline can change it, and if you purchased from the airline directly then only the airline can change it, etc. As a courtesy, a travel management company, like Travel-On, can sometimes call the airline directly to assist with a change.
