Dominican Republic – Zika Virus

The mosquito-borne Zika virus, also referred to as ZIKV, has now reached the Caribbean, with a 12-year-old girl in the Dominican Republic becoming the first person to contract the virus. The zika virus is transmitted by the bite of an infected Aedes aegypti mosquito, the same mosquito that transmits chikungunya and dengue. Symptoms are similar to dengue including fever, joint and muscle pain, conjunctivitis, headache, weakness, rash and swelling of the lower limbs. After the bite of an infected mosquito, symptoms usually appear following the incubation period of three to 12 days and last for four to seven days.

Q and A

Which way takes longer to recover from jetlag – west to east or east to west?

Most people aren’t too bothered by jetlag on flights that cross fewer than 4 time zones, but on longer flights it can be a bit of a drag. The general rule of thumb is that it takes 1/2 day per time zone to recover when flying east to west and 1 day per time zone west to east. While there are dozens of “remedies” for jetlag available on the internet, the one proven step that will help is to be certain you are well hydrated before, during, and after the flights.
