Europe and Russia – Powerful Storm to Cause Major Disruptions
A major cyclone is bringing severe weather to the northern UK, Norway, and northern Europe. The storm will affect the Faroe Islands, Shetland Islands, Scotland, and northern England Dec. 5 before entering the northern North Sea and tracking through southern Norway and southern Sweden before entering the Baltic Sea Dec. 6. Disruptive winter weather may continue for several days in southern Sweden, southern Finland, the Baltic states, and the St. Petersburg region in Russia.
Hurricane-force winds of more than 74 mph are expected while the system is in the North Sea, which will likely cause serious maritime and air transport disruptions, coastal flooding, and wind damage in parts of the UK, Norway, the Netherlands, northern Germany, and Denmark. Significant damage is possible due to strong winds and flooding. Widespread flight delays and cancellations are expected throughout the affected countries, particularly Amsterdam, Oslo, Hamburg, and Copenhagen.
