China – Fog and Smog Could Disrupt Ground and Air Transport

Air quality alerts are in effect from Shanghai to Tianjin, including Hebei, Shandong, eastern Henan, eastern Anhui, and Jiangsu provinces. The Air Quality Index topped 300 in Shanghai Dec. 4, and air pollution surpassed 500, the highest level on the index. Air quality conditions were expected to worsen in parts of the affected areas through Dec. 9, especially in Jiangsu Province and the Sichuan Basin. Poor visibility due to dense fog and smog has prompted authorities to shut down schools and advise against outdoor activity. Officials could close major highway systems, as visibility has decreased to less than 50 meters (165 feet) in some areas. Authorities may cancel public transport, including bus and train service. Flight cancellations and/or delays are also possible, though the risk is greater at regional airports than large international hubs.
