I heard something about a new uniform size for carry-on luggage. Am I going to need to buy a new carry-on?

No, not at all. Last week the International Air Transport Association (IATA) issued a proposal that said the optimum size for carry-on luggage is 21.5″ x 13.5″ x 7.5″. This was calculated as the way to divvy up the available space so that all passengers on the plane have room for one carry-on bag. It was a suggestion only. No airline adopted this standard and several specifically stated that they had no intention of doing so. Amid public concern IATA has withdrawn the proposal and is consulting with airlines to find other ideas. You may continue to travel with any size carry-on bag so long as it fits without your airline’s maximum allowable size.
