What is the difference between a Travel Alert and a Travel Warning?
The State Department issues two types of travel notices. A Travel Alert is issued for a short-term situation, such as a protest or weather event. The more serious Travel Warning is used for situations that have a longer-term impact on travel and travelers, such as political unrest or war. All State Department notices should be reviewed and analyzed in terms of your specific travel plans and personal/business security concerns. All international travelers are encouraged to sign up for the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP). This provides the most current information about the country where you will be traveling or living and makes it easier for consular officers in U.S. embassies and consulates around the world to contact you and your loved ones during an emergency.
