If my state is now issuing Real ID Act compliant driver’s licenses, but my license was issued before then and is not compliant, do I need to get a new license before Jan 22?

Good news – no! At this time the Real ID Act as it relates to travel is all about whether your state is compliant, not whether your individual license is compliant. Beginning Jan 22, 2018, in order to continue using a driver’s license as your ID to board a plane your state must either be issuing Real ID Act compliant licenses, or have had an extension granted. Not until Oct 1, 2020, must each individual license be compliant. So keep using your current license, but know that if it is not up for scheduled renewal prior to Oct 1, 2020, you will need to have it renewed early (or use a different form of acceptable IID).
