Russia – Tight Security, Traffic Disruptions Likely in Moscow May 4-5 for Easter Holiday

Authorities will impose traffic restrictions in several administrative districts of Moscow on May 4-5 for various celebrations of Orthodox Easter. Approximately two million people will visit Moscow cemeteries. For security reasons, vehicles must park no closer than 50 meters (164 feet) from Orthodox churches and cathedrals. Expect other road closures and traffic delays throughout Moscow, especially around cemeteries. Licensed taxis may be difficult to find. Authorities will also bolster security and institute identification checkpoints around churches and might restrict access to metro stops. Additionally, petty crime, especially pickpocketing, theft and assault, typically increases during special events in Moscow; criminals may deliberately target foreigners.
