Egypt – State of Emergency Declared

Egypt declared a month-long state of emergency beginning on Aug 14th, as violence raged across the country following a crackdown on supporters of ousted president Mohamed Morsy. Interim president Adly Mansour “”has tasked the armed forces, in cooperation with the police, to take all necessary measures to maintain security and order and to protect public and private property and the lives of citizens”” and the Interior Ministry authorized police to use live ammunition to protect state institutions. A number of areas, including Cairo, are under a 2100-0600 curfew. U.S. citizens should avoid areas where large gatherings may occur. The U.S. State Department advised against travel to Egypt and for all U.S. citizens in Egypt to depart the country. Anyone remaining is reminded to review their personal security plans and remain alert to their surroundings at all times.
