Bangladesh – Tropical Cyclone 01B

Tropical Cyclone Mahasen (01B) made landfall at Sitakunda, approximately 22 miles northwest of Chittagong at about 1530 May 16 with maximum sustained winds of 51 mph. Nearly 1 million people were evacuated. Thousands of homes have been destroyed and 12 people have been reported killed. The storm has weakened significantly and is forecast to rapidly dissipate as it moves northeast into India. Electricity outages have been reported north of Chittagong to Cox’s Bazaar. Flooding is occurring in low-lying and coastal areas due to heavy rains and storm surge.
