China – Security Tight for APEC Conference

Authorities are expanding traffic regulations and security ahead of the 2014 Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Summit Nov. 7-10 in Beijing. Thousands of uniformed and plainclothes police, as well as military personnel, are being deployed throughout the city. Most meetings will take place at the China National Convention Center. however, several other events are scheduled to take place throughout the city. Extremely tight security will be prevalent in Huairou District and Beijing Capital International Airport Nov. 7-11, as government leaders arrive and depart. Security will also likely be extremely tight in Beijing Subway stations surrounding the event, and authorities could periodically suspend service to stations near the China National Convention Center. Expect localized traffic disruptions near scheduled meetings, as security officials will likely erect roadblocks and/or checkpoints near all events. Similar disruptions are also possible near diplomatic missions of APEC member states – especially the embassies of the US and Japan – due to heightened security measures.
