  • Orlando’s airport code of MCO has nothing to do with Mickey Mouse, but instead comes from McCoy Air Force Base, the site of the original airport
  • Ever heard of GSW? It’s the code for American Airlines Flight Academy located at the former Greater SouthWest Airport in Texas
  • Louisville’s SDF code comes from its former name – Standiford Field
  • Chicago O’Hare’s code of ORD is a reminder of Orchard Field Airport, its original name
  • Sioux City, IA, has twice tried to change its code of SUX, before embracing it with the new slogan “Fly SUX”
  • Knoxville’s airport code is TYS, from its proper name of McGhee Tyson airport, named after Lt. Charles McGhee Tyson who was killed in WWI and whose parents donated the land for the original airport
  • New Orleans’ airport’s code is MSY, standing for Moisant Stock Yards
  • The code for Kansas City International Airport is MCI because it was originally to be named Mid-Continent International
