Happy 90th Birthday, United Airlines!

  • In the 1920s, prior to United Airlines being United Airlines, Boeing operated an airline called United Air Lines
  • Chicago O’Hare is United’s largest hub in terms of departures, but they move more people through their hub at Houston Intercontinental
  • In 1994, United’s pilots, machinists, bag handlers and non-contract employees acquired 55% of company stock in exchange for 15–25% salary concessions, making the carrier the largest employee-owned corporation in the world at that time
  • In 1933 the acquisition of the first all-metal airplane, the Boeing 247, allowed United to fly coast to coast in 20 hours, slightly ahead of other airlines
  • When United moved its headquarters to the Willis Tower in Chicago, some of the floors weren’t connected via elevator, making it necessary to take one elevator to connect to another elevator
  • Jimmy Carter used a leased United plane nicknamed “”Peanut One”” on the campaign trail in 1976
  • United expanded dramatically by purchasing Pan Am’s entire Pacific Division in 1985 and its routes to London’s Heathrow Airport in 1991
  • Among the former airlines now a part of United are Frontier (the original one), People Express, New York Air, Air Micronesia, and Texas Air
