Rio – Olympics
The 2016 Olympic Games will occur Aug. 5-21 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, with the Paralympic Games following Sept. 7-18. Tight security is in place throughout the city, concentrated primarily in four different Olympic venue areas: Barra da Tijuca, Deodoro, Maracana, and Copacabana. Road closures and restrictions are in place in Rio de Janeiro. Statewide holidays have been decreed for Aug. 5, 18, and 22 to reduce impact on the transportation infrastructure. School vacation will also coincide with the Games, further diminishing the amount of traffic in the city. All Brazilian airports have implemented increased security screening measures. Passengers have been advised to arrive as much as two hours ahead of domestic flights due to long lines at security checkpoints. BRT (Bus Rapid Transit) will be available for public use during the Games.
