South Africa – Slow-Rolling Blockades in Johannesburg

The Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu), as well as 10 civic and religious organizations, plan to stage a series of slow-rolling blockades along roadways in and around Johannesburg to disrupt traffic as a means of protesting the implementation of electronic tolling systems. Expect severe traffic disruptions in the vicinity of the announced convoy routes. Clashes between demonstrators and police cannot be ruled out. Specific plans include the following:

May 31: Beginning at 0830 at Hatfield stadium to Heidelberg Road, the N3 north, the N12 north, the R24 south, the N12 south, and the N3 south, returning to Heidelberg Road.

June 10: Organizers are planning a massive march in Gauteng Province. Specific details of this event have not yet been released.
