US – Winter Storm in Northeast

A major winter storm is forecast to bring significant snowfall and strong winds to the Mid-Atlantic and New England regions Jan. 22-24. Snow could begin as a wintry mix during the afternoon of Jan. 22 in the Washington, DC area before transitioning to heavy snow. The system will move northeast and bring snowfall to the New York City and possibly Boston, metropolitan areas by Jan. 23. Snowfall could continue through the northeast into the very early hours Jan. 24. Snowfall totals of 12-24 inches are likely in central Maryland, DC, and Northern Virginia, and up to 12 inches along the I-95 corridor from Philadelphia to New York. Intense winds gusting up to 60 mph are likely, particularly along the coast, which may cause whiteout conditions and power outages. Extensive flight cancellations and lengthy delays can be expected at airports from South Carolina to Massachusetts and west to Tennessee and Kentucky.Amtrak may experience significant delays and metro, subway, and commuter rail services will likely operate on modified schedules.
